NiDCOM Confirms Release of Detained Nigerian Girls in Mauritius

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed the release of a group of Nigerian girls who were recently detained abroad, announcing that they are now on their way back to Nairobi.

The commission’s update comes after widespread public concern over a viral video showing the young women being held at an airport, prompting calls for the Nigerian government to intervene.

The video, shared on Instagram by user #Queenbethia, alleged that the girls had been detained at Mauritius Airport since July 31, 2026. In the post, the user appealed to relevant authorities to take urgent action, describing similar incidents in Mauritius as recurring.

Providing an update on Monday, NiDCOM said the girls had regained their freedom and that efforts were ongoing to ensure the circumstances surrounding their detention were thoroughly addressed.

“The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) wishes to inform the public that the Nigerian girls who were previously detained have been released. They are currently on their way back to Nairobi,” the commission said in a statement issued by its Digital Media Unit.

NiDCOM also disclosed that its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, is working closely with the appropriate Nigerian diplomatic mission to ensure the matter is pursued with the relevant authorities in the country where the incident occurred.

According to the commission, the Nigerian Embassy has formally taken up the issue and is seeking accountability while working to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the interests and welfare of Nigerians living, studying or travelling abroad, noting that the intervention aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda on citizens’ welfare.

Despite confirming the girls’ release, NiDCOM did not reveal their identities, the specific circumstances surrounding their detention, or provide details about the investigation into the incident.

The commission also did not state when the girls are expected to return to Nigeria after arriving in Nairobi.

As of the time of reporting, neither the Mauritian authorities nor officials at Mauritius Airport had issued a statement explaining the reasons for the detention or the delay experienced by the Nigerian travellers.
