Inspector-General of Police Visits Niger, Pledges Safe Rescue of Abducted Worshippers

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Saturday visited Niger State to assess the security situation and review ongoing efforts to rescue worshippers abducted during a recent attack in communities across Dekara District, Borgu Local Government Area.

Disu made the visit to the Niger State Government House, where he was received by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, who represented Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, alongside the Commissioner for Homeland Security, Maurice Magaji.

The visit came as security agencies intensify efforts to locate and safely recover the abducted victims while tracking those responsible for the attack.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, the IGP conveyed the condolences of the Nigeria Police Force to the Niger State Government, residents and families affected by the incident.

Disu assured the state that the safe recovery of the victims and the arrest of those behind the attack remained the primary objectives of the ongoing security operations.

He commended the state Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, for the command’s response and timely transmission of intelligence and situation reports following the incident.

The IGP also praised the Niger State Government for its continued support for police operations, particularly the provision of operational vehicles, repairs of Armoured Personnel Carriers and welfare assistance for personnel.

While addressing officers and personnel of the Niger State Police Command, Disu directed them to maintain intelligence-driven and professionally coordinated operations, with the safety of the abducted persons and affected communities remaining a priority.

He assured the command that the Force Headquarters would continue to provide support aimed at improving its logistics, mobility, intelligence gathering, training and overall operational capacity.

The IGP further called for stronger cooperation between the police and other security agencies, as well as increased engagement with local communities.

He emphasised the importance of working closely with traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders and other stakeholders to improve intelligence gathering, strengthen early-warning mechanisms and facilitate faster responses to security threats.

Receiving the IGP, Deputy Governor Garba commended Disu for personally visiting the state to assess the situation and support the ongoing rescue efforts.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the police and other security agencies in protecting residents, restoring peace and securing the release of the abducted worshippers.

During the visit, Disu also met with the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Dr Umar Farouk Bahago, as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation with traditional institutions.

The meeting focused on intelligence sharing, community engagement and measures aimed at improving security and restoring lasting peace across Niger State.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to rescuing the abducted victims, protecting vulnerable communities and ensuring that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
