Wizkid And Davido : The Ongoing Battle For Supremacy – By Ocheibi Abigail

Am I the only one who feels that the vibes coming from both Wizkid and Davido as compared to when they kicked off their music careers have been appreciating the law of diminishing returns due to lack of focused input?

It’s rather dull-witted to have two potential legends shallowly and shamelessly dishing “savage tweets” against each other at every little opportunity when they both stand a chance to be celebrated like Fela Anikulapo Kuti and King Sunny Ade.

Who else remembers the energy, creativity and uniqueness that came with Wizkid’s first studio album, “Superstar” in 2011? Now that’s some timeless record right there. From tracks like ‘Don’t Dull’, ‘Love My Baby‘ to ‘Pakurumo’ ,  ‘Tease Me’ and more, Wizkid held music lovers across Africa captive from 2009 through 2014, making him the first Nigerian to hit over 1 million followers on Twitter in February of same year.

Do I need remind you that Davido’s first hit track also dropped in 2011? And just when the lot of us thought it was a one hit wonder moment for OBO, songs such as ‘ All Of You’, ‘Ekuro’,Back When‘ and  ‘Feel Alright‘ got all radio/TV stations, clubs and fans all over Africa screaming ‘Omo Baba Olowo‘; his 17-track album which dropped in 2012.

Did you know that since the arrival of Davido into the scene in 2011, following his hit track, ‘Dami Duro‘ there has been what I call “comparison” (not beef) between himself and Wizkid on different grounds? Of course it was okay. Why? Because it was a healthy one and the results of such ‘comparisons’ got us lots of timeless sounds from these GREAT artistes.

Right now, all I see is two fugitive adults, scared of facing their super and undisputed talented younger selves to get back to the studio and give their hungry and loyal fans good music.

Funny how you both have become professional lyricists only on social media while dropping ‘ sound from the other side’ and throwing ‘bananas‘ at us! What a joke!

What is more vexatious about these creative acts is the fact they have allowed their brains trick them into a delusional space of believing that ‘awards’ are a true judge of their output. Dudes, please mention an award across the globe that is worth a timeless record? Do you all think that Fela is being celebrated today because of any particular award he won? Damn it! Think!!! Fela still lives in us because his music lives.

Come to think of it, both Davido and Wizkid have won the much talked about ‘MTV Europe Music Award for Best African Act’ with Wizkid winning in 2016 (even though them do am ojoro, carry the award give one person like that…abeg help me recall him name or any song wey e sing) while Davido won it in 2017. They’ve both won other awards such as BET, Headies, MTV Africa, AFRIMA and more. So why the noise?

Guys, if you really want to make African sound global, quit the chicken-hearted social media blabbering and channel all that energy to the studio. We have had enough of your savage and epic clap-backs, we want to have worth for our money if we have to pay for your music or concerts.

I’ve also discovered that one self-acclaimed artist who once asked Nigerians to help him ‘say amin’ and another of his kind from our sister-country whose  name doesn’t have the best of connotation in Yoruba Language have also weighed into this Davido and Wizkid ish without even realizing the fact that ‘this shit’ has been going on before both their “careers” kicked off.

My sincere advice to the above garrulous wannabes; is to broaden their horizons towards Tekno’s path by doing a collaboration with either Davido or Wizkid to salvage their yet to be conceived careers as far as music is concerned.

So no, Wizkid and Davido you need no rant anymore, just do your fans a favour; work together towards making Nigeria and Africa, the world’s largest music export!! Focus on the bigger picture!  Gracias!
