Real Madrid Star Ferland Mendy Headed to Trial Over Savage Dog Attack

Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy is set to stand trial after one of his dogs allegedly attacked a teenager and two other dogs after escaping from his property, according to reports in Spain.

Court documents cited by Spanish media on Tuesday showed that the private prosecution is seeking a six-month prison sentence for the France international on allegations of causing injury through gross negligence.

In addition to the proposed jail term, prosecutors are also seeking financial penalties, while the public prosecutor’s office has requested fines for what it described as a minor injury-related offence.

According to a Madrid court document dated January 7 and obtained by AFP, the incident dates back to January 2023, when four dogs reportedly belonging to Mendy escaped from his home in the upscale Madrid suburb of Alcobendas.

Reports said the animals got out after the property’s gate was left open while a vehicle was entering.

During the incident, one of the dogs allegedly attacked another woman’s pet, which suffered severe injuries and was later euthanised. A 17-year-old boy who attempted to separate the animals was also reportedly bitten, along with a relative’s dog that he had been walking at the time.

The case is expected to proceed to trial, where the court will determine whether Mendy bears legal responsibility for the alleged negligence.

Mendy, 31, joined Real Madrid from French club Lyon in 2019 and has won several major honours with the Spanish giants. However, his time at the club has been repeatedly interrupted by injuries.
