Tinubu Celebrates Obasanjo’s Impact on Nigeria at 89

President Bola Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the occasion of his 89th birthday, hailing him as a statesman whose enduring legacy continues to resonate across Nigeria, Africa and the global stage.

In a statement released on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President joined family, friends and admirers in celebrating Obasanjo as he marks his 89th birthday on March 5.

Tinubu described the former leader as an influential figure whose impact transcends borders, noting that his voice and actions have long shaped political thought and governance both at home and abroad.

Reflecting on Obasanjo’s decades of service, the President highlighted his pivotal role in Nigeria’s history — first as military Head of State from 1976 to 1979, when he oversaw a transition to civilian rule, and later as the country’s first democratically elected president in the Fourth Republic, serving from 1999 to 2007.

Tinubu also recalled Obasanjo’s contributions during defining national moments, including his leadership on the warfront in defence of Nigeria’s unity, his imprisonment for opposing authoritarian rule, and his persistent advocacy for Africa’s political and economic advancement.

As the elder statesman turns 89, the President commended what he described as Obasanjo’s enduring zeal for nation-building, evident in his writings, public interventions and continued engagement in matters of governance and development.

He concluded by praying for continued good health, strength and wisdom for the former president, expressing hope that Obasanjo will keep lending his experience and counsel in service to Nigeria and humanity at large.
