Resign Honorably: Kano Commissioner Tells Deputy Governor Gwarzo to Quit After Refusing APC Move

Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, has called on Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo to step aside after refusing to defect with Governor Abba Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress, saying the development raises serious questions about trust and cohesion within the state’s leadership.

Speaking to journalists in Kano on Thursday, Waiya argued that effective governance thrives on unity, loyalty, and shared political direction among members of the executive council, warning that a divided leadership could undermine decision-making at the highest level.

He said it would be inappropriate for a deputy governor who no longer shares political alignment with the governor to remain part of sensitive government deliberations.

“This is his personal decision, but there is no way someone who is no longer with you should be part of routine council meetings,” Waiya said. “Who knows with whom he might share important government secrets? In government, trust is everything, and you cannot fully trust someone who is no longer on the same side.”

The commissioner added that resigning would be the most honourable step for the deputy governor, insisting that political clarity is essential for smooth governance. “If I were him, I would humbly resign,” he stated.

Waiya’s comments come amid intense political realignments in Kano State following Governor Yusuf’s recent move from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the APC. He described the governor’s defection as a strategic decision that could open the door to greater federal support and accelerated development projects for the state.

Governor Yusuf, who won the 2023 election on the NNPP platform, announced his switch to the ruling party to strengthen collaboration with the Federal Government and attract more infrastructure and social interventions to Kano.

The governor’s defection triggered a wave of political shifts in the state, with several lawmakers, local government chairmen, councillors, and other political actors aligning with him, a development that has significantly altered the state’s political landscape and weakened the NNPP’s influence.

As tensions rise within Kano’s political space, the call for the deputy governor’s resignation adds a new layer to the unfolding power dynamics, with observers closely watching how the rift within the state’s leadership will evolve.
