NRC Orders Probe Into Assault of Lecturer at Oyo Railway Station

The management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation has reacted to reports alleging that Mikail Abdussalam, a lecturer at the University of Ibadan, was assaulted at the Obafemi Awolowo Train Station.

In a statement released on Monday in Lagos, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, said the corporation had taken note of the reports concerning the incident.

The alleged assault reportedly occurred on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. According to accounts of the incident, Abdussalam had driven his sister to the train station in Moniya so she could board a train bound for Lagos.

During the visit, a disagreement is said to have broken out, which later escalated. NRC personnel were accused of physically attacking the lecturer, causing him injuries and allegedly issuing threats to his life.

Reacting to the development, Opeifa stated that the corporation treats the matter with utmost seriousness, stressing that harassment, intimidation, or any form of misconduct against passengers or members of the public is unacceptable and contradicts the organisation’s core values and service standards.

He disclosed that management has directed that a thorough investigation be carried out immediately to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to him, any staff member found guilty of violating the corporation’s professional and public service code of conduct will face disciplinary action in line with existing rules and regulations.

The NRC also expressed regret over the incident and apologised to the lecturer for the distress caused.

Opeifa reiterated the corporation’s commitment to ensuring that passengers and visitors at railway stations are treated with respect, dignity, and professionalism at all times. He added that measures are being strengthened to ensure strict compliance with customer service standards across all NRC facilities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
