Nigeria @65: Edo, Niger, call for unity, nation-building

As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence anniversary, leaders from Edo and Niger states are urging citizens to see the milestone not just as a celebration, but as a time to reflect, pray, and actively contribute to nation-building.

The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, described October 1 as a reminder of the courage, sacrifices, and vision of Nigeria’s founding fathers, who laid the foundation for a united and prosperous nation.

In a message released by his Chief Press Secretary, Friday Aghedo, Idahosa stressed that Nigerians must harness their resilience, creativity, and determination to build a stronger country.

“The independence anniversary is not only a celebration of our freedom as a people, but also a call to duty. It is a reminder that the task of building a greater Nigeria lies with all of us. Let us remain committed to peace, justice, and the collective good of our nation,” he said.

He also commended the Edo people for supporting Governor Monday Okpebholo’s vision of inclusive growth and pledged continued commitment to improving citizens’ quality of life through people-centred policies and programmes.

Similarly, the Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Bago, urged Nigerians to pray for purposeful leaders at all levels of government.

Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Bago highlighted that Nigeria’s 65 years of nationhood, with its rich cultural diversity, is a milestone worthy of reflection on unity, resilience, and national progress.

“Nigeria is a blessed nation with abundant human, natural, and capital resources,” Bago said, noting ongoing efforts by governments at all levels to strengthen institutions and implement reforms that maximise the nation’s potential while improving the safety and well-being of its citizens. He called on Nigerians to renew their commitment to patriotism, selflessness, and collective nation-building.

“The task of nation-building is a collective one; hence, Nigerians should continue to pray for purposeful leaders at all levels. My administration remains committed to actualising the New Niger agenda, creating economic opportunities, and improving the lives of our people,” Bago added.

Both leaders urged citizens to reflect on the nation’s journey, embrace its diversity as a strength, and commit to unity, integrity, and service to humanity as Nigeria celebrates 65 years of independence.
