Kano Hospital Takes Action: Three Staff Suspended After Mother of Five Dies Under Their Care

The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has placed three health workers on immediate suspension following the death of a mother of five, Aishatu Umar, after a surgical procedure at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano.

The decision follows a preliminary investigation into the incident, which reportedly involved allegations of medical negligence.

Confirming the development in a statement on Wednesday, the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, said the suspensions were approved by the Executive Secretary of the Board, Mansur Mudi Nagoda, as part of efforts to ensure accountability and transparency.

According to the statement, the investigation confirmed that the incident occurred at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre, prompting the Board to take immediate action.

“In line with our commitment to professionalism, patient safety and accountability, three personnel directly connected to the case have been suspended from all clinical duties with immediate effect,” Suleiman stated.

She added that the case has been formally referred to the Kano State Medical Ethical Committee for a more detailed investigation and for any necessary disciplinary measures in line with established laws, professional regulations and ethical standards.

The Board expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and sympathised with them over the tragic loss.

It further assured members of the public that negligence would not be tolerated in any of the state’s health facilities, reiterating its resolve to protect the safety, dignity and confidence of patients.

The management board also pledged to strengthen internal supervision, strictly enforce professional standards and put preventive measures in place to avert similar incidents in the future.

Aishatu Umar was reported to have died in the early hours of Tuesday after months of persistent abdominal pain, which her family attributed to complications arising from a surgical procedure carried out at the hospital in September 2025.

A family member, Mohammed, alleged in a social media post that Umar endured severe abdominal pain for about four months before her death.

Following public outcry over the incident, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board had earlier ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
