Justice for UNIJOS: NANS Calls for Presidential Probe Into Student’s Murder

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council in Lagos State, has urged Bola Ahmed Tinubu to set up a presidential panel to investigate the killing of Abel Gershon, a 300-level student of the University of Jos.

In a statement signed by its chairman, Ridwan Ajayi, the group said the panel should uncover those responsible for the attack, ensure they are prosecuted, and recommend steps to prevent similar incidents.

Gershon was injured during the March 29 attack on the Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly stormed the area on motorcycles and opened fire on residents. Although he initially survived, he later died at the intensive care unit of the Jos University Teaching Hospital.

The incident, which also affected other students and residents, has since claimed at least 33 lives as more victims succumbed to their injuries.

NANS described the attack as a reflection of Nigeria’s worsening security situation rather than an isolated case, calling for urgent and decisive action from the government.

The group stressed that the proposed inquiry must identify the perpetrators, ensure swift justice, and provide lasting solutions to curb such violence. It also vowed to pursue justice for Gershon and other victims through lawful means, insisting that the safety of students across the country must be prioritised.

In addition, the students’ body criticised what it called persistent failures in the country’s security system, noting that students should feel safe both on campus and in surrounding communities.

NANS, however, commended Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State, for facilitating the evacuation of students from Lagos who were affected by the crisis, describing the move as timely and responsible.

Meanwhile, officials have also pledged action. The Chief of Staff to the Plateau State Governor, Jeremiah Satmark, speaking on behalf of Caleb Mutfwang, assured that those behind the attack would be brought to justice.

Similarly, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, during a visit to Jos, condemned the killings and promised that security agencies would track down those responsible. He added that senior police officials had already been deployed to coordinate operations in the state.

NANS extended condolences to the family of Abel Gershon, his colleagues, and the University of Jos community, stressing that his death must not go unanswered and renewing its call for justice, accountability, and stronger protection for students nationwide.
