Anambra Approves ₦604m Projects Ahead of Soludo’s Swearing-In

The Anambra State Government has approved a fresh round of infrastructure contracts valued at approximately ₦604 million, reinforcing its push to deepen social cohesion, stimulate economic activity, and improve living standards across the state.

The approvals were granted during the second 2026 meeting of the State Executive Council held on March 2 at the “Light House” in Awka, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor.

Beyond infrastructure, the Council also finalised arrangements for the second-term inauguration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his deputy, Onyekachukwu Ibezim, approving three key events and setting up subcommittees to ensure seamless coordination.

The scheduled events include an interdenominational church service on Sunday, March 15; the swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, March 17; and a thanksgiving service on Sunday, March 22.

In a significant moral stance, the Council also reviewed and endorsed the sentencing of Anambra-based native doctor Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as “Akwa Ọkụkụ Tiwara Akị,” alongside the demolition of his shrine and “Oke Ite” ritual pots. The government described the move as part of a broader effort to restore ethical standards and social order in the state.

Reaffirming its ideological direction, the Council referenced the Igbo philosophy, “Aka aja aja na-ebute ọnụ mmanụ mmanụ” — meaning hard work leads to prosperity — as the cornerstone of Anambra’s social rebirth agenda.

In another policy shift, the Council declared that Ekwueme Square in Awka will henceforth be reserved strictly for official government functions. Private events previously held there will now be redirected to the Multipurpose Arena at the Awka Township Stadium.

The newly sanctioned projects span sports infrastructure, road safety enhancements, security support facilities, and urban upgrades:

  • ₦164.4 million approved as cost overrun for the construction of an IAAF-standard five-lane track and natural grass pitch at the Ekwulobia Stadium Complex, executed by Phimax Global Enterprises Ltd.
  • ₦72.6 million for road marking and installation of thermoplastic speed bumps along the 10.043-kilometre Afor Nkpor–Eke Obosi Road.
  • ₦121.9 million for the supply and installation of 10 forty-foot container units across multiple locations to serve as temporary accommodation for security personnel, awarded to Achufusi Ventures.
  • ₦172.2 million for Lot 1 — asphalt surfacing of the internal dual carriage driveway at the ICC Awka.
  • ₦175.4 million for Lot 2 — asphalt surfacing of the service lane leading to the State House of Assembly and the High Court Complex in Awka.

The administration’s latest approvals build on earlier commitments this year. In January, the state government sanctioned projects worth about ₦16.7 billion covering roads, electricity, and other strategic infrastructure initiatives aimed at accelerating development.

Complementing these efforts, the Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade), has commenced enforcement of road setback regulations along newly constructed dual carriageways — a move designed to protect public infrastructure and sustain urban order.

Officials say the combined measures reflect a coordinated strategy focused on infrastructure expansion, institutional strengthening, and the restoration of social discipline as the Soludo administration begins its second term.
