A Lifetime of Service: Tinubu Honors Mentor and Ally Bisi Akande as He Hits 87

President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former Osun State Governor and pioneer National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Bisi Akande, as the elder statesman turns 87 on Friday.

In a heartfelt message, the President described Akande as a towering figure in Nigeria’s political history, whose life and service have left a lasting imprint on the nation’s democratic journey and institutional growth.

“Baba Akande has made invaluable contributions to the growth and development of our country and to the emergence and strengthening of democracy in Nigeria,” Tinubu said.

Reflecting on Akande’s political evolution, the President noted that his path was deeply shaped by the ideals and philosophy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, which guided his lifelong commitment to progressive politics.

Akande began his professional career as an accountant with British Petroleum before taking a decisive step into public service—a move that marked the beginning of a distinguished political career. Tinubu said Akande consistently demonstrated excellence and integrity throughout his years in office.

His public service record includes serving as Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State in 1979, Deputy Governor during the Second Republic, and later Governor of Osun State from 1999 to 2003.

Tinubu highlighted Akande’s pivotal role in the formation of the APC, noting that as the party’s interim chairman, he helped lay the foundation for a historic political coalition that, for the first time in Nigeria’s history, defeated a sitting government at the federal level in 2015.

“We owe Baba Akande our gratitude for his leadership, wisdom, hard work, and selfless dedication to our party and our country,” the President said. “His contributions to his state, the nation, and the progressive movement remain deeply appreciated.”

Describing Akande as a mentor and moral compass, Tinubu praised his unwavering commitment to integrity, honesty, and the values that strengthen national character.

“I remain profoundly grateful for Baba Akande’s guidance, counsel, and encouragement, which played a significant role in my political journey and eventual emergence as President,” Tinubu added.

He also acknowledged Akande’s continued support for the current administration and its Renewed Hope Agenda, describing his presence as an ally and partner as invaluable.

According to the President, Akande remains remarkably active and resolute at 87, continuing to champion democracy, social justice, and good governance with undiminished passion.

Tinubu concluded by offering prayers for good health, strength, and continued wisdom for the former governor as he marks another milestone.
