Video: Police vow to go after LGBTQ members in viral TikTok clip

The police have said they will take action against some persons who identify as members of the LGBTQ community in a video which has gone viral on social media.

In the video, some Nigerians, identifying themselves as lesbians, bisexuals, heterosexuals and transgender or queer or (LGBTQ), participated in the “Of Course” challenge on TikTok.

The self-confessed LGBTQ members spoke about their sexuality and the misconceptions people have about them.

Reacting to the video on Wednesday, spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force Olumuyiwa Adejobi described their actions as “disgusting and destructive”.

“They are criminals and punishable under the law. We are on this clip to take necessary action according to the provisions of the law in Nigeria,” he said.

“These are unnatural offences and are totally condemned. It is even disgusting, evil and destructive.”

The video has triggered a wave of mixed reactions from some Nigerians on social media.

LGBTQ remains constitutionally unrecognised in Nigeria. Violators risk a prison term of 14 years.
