Super Eagles Crush Mozambique 4-0 to Storm into AFCON Quarter-Finals

The Super Eagles have secured a spot in the AFCON 2025 quarter-finals after an emphatic 4–0 win over Mozambique in their Round of 16 encounter in Fès.

Nigeria picked up right where they left off, extending their perfect run after winning all three group-stage matches to finish top of Group C. Mozambique, who reached the knockout phase for the first time after qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams from Group F, found it difficult to match Nigeria’s speed and attacking intensity.

The breakthrough came in the 20th minute, when Ademola Lookman calmly finished off a well-timed assist from Akor Adams. Victor Osimhen made it 2–0 just five minutes later, before striking again in the 47th minute after another clever setup from Lookman. Adams rounded off the dominant display with Nigeria’s fourth goal in the 75th minute.

In midfield, Wilfred Ndidi led the team alongside Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi, while Stanley Nwabali returned between the posts. The defensive line of Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, and Bruno Onyemaechi remained solid, shutting out Mozambique for the entire match.

Head coach Chelle rotated his squad in the second half, bringing on Paul Onuachu and Samuel Chukwueze for Adams and Lookman. Tom Dele-Bashiru and Raphael Onyedika replaced Onyeka and Ndidi, while Moses Simon came on for Osimhen to keep the attack fresh.

By the 80th minute, Nigeria had recorded eight shots on target, with Mozambique failing to register a single effort that tested Nwabali.

With the convincing victory, the Super Eagles march into the quarter-finals full of confidence as they continue their push for a fourth AFCON title. Their next challenge will come against the winners of the clash between Algeria and Congo DR.
