Police Debunk Bomb Rumors: Equipment Overheating Caused Kebbi Hospital Explosion

The Kebbi State Police Command has officially cleared the air regarding an early morning explosion at the Bagudo General Hospital, confirming the incident was an industrial accident rather than an act of terrorism.

The blast, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, initially sparked widespread panic, with unverified reports suggesting a bomb attack or aerial bombardment. However, authorities have now confirmed that the “explosions” were the result of a fire-induced equipment failure.

According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, the loud bangs heard by residents were caused by an inferno that reached critical temperatures.

“Investigations and expert assessments have confirmed that the incident was caused by an inferno which overheated air-conditioning and refrigerator gas cylinders,” Usman explained. He emphasized that the pressure build-up in these cylinders resulted in the “loud explosions” observed by the public.

To ensure public safety and accuracy, the Commissioner of Police deployed a specialized Tactical Team alongside EOD-CBRN (Explosive Ordnance Disposal – Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) experts to the scene.

Their assessment confirmed several key facts:

  • No Explosives: No traces of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) or bombs were found.

  • No Aerial Activity: Claims of helicopter involvement were dismissed as baseless.

  • Zero Casualties: Despite the structural damage and the intensity of the noise, no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded.

The Police Command has urged the media and the general public to stop the spread of “fake news” that could incite unnecessary fear.

“We advise everyone to rely solely on official information. The situation remains fully under control, and the Command remains committed to public safety and transparency,” SP Usman stated.

While the incident caused significant confusion earlier in the day, security agencies have since secured the hospital premises. Operations are expected to return to normal as the facility begins assessing the accidental damage.
