Nigeria Salutes Ghana on 69th Independence Day

Nigeria has extended warm congratulations to Ghana as the country marks its 69th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming the strong diplomatic and cultural bonds that have long existed between both nations.

The message was conveyed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, in a statement issued on Friday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, to Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The statement commemorated Ghana’s historic independence from colonial rule on March 6, 1957.

Tuggar described Ghana’s independence as a landmark achievement in Africa’s history, noting that it played a crucial role in inspiring other African nations, including Nigeria, to pursue self-governance and national sovereignty.

According to him, the Nigerian government joins Ghanaians in celebrating the milestone while acknowledging the country’s sustained contributions to democratic governance, regional cooperation, and peaceful development across the continent.

He noted that Nigeria and Ghana maintain deep-rooted historical and cultural ties, built on shared values and a common commitment to peace, prosperity, and African unity.

The minister highlighted that both countries have remained key drivers of democratic stability in West Africa and have continued to collaborate through regional and global organisations such as the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union, and the United Nations.

Tuggar further stated that bilateral relations between the two countries have grown stronger over the years through regular high-level engagements and cooperation in several sectors, including trade, education, energy, defence, migration management, and cultural exchange.

He added that the free movement of citizens between both nations under regional agreements has further strengthened economic collaboration and enhanced people-to-people relationships.

The minister also commended Ghana’s role in promoting democratic governance and regional peace, noting that both countries have worked together in peacekeeping missions, mediation efforts, and initiatives aimed at preventing conflicts across West Africa.

As Ghana commemorates this year’s independence under the theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” Tuggar praised the resilience and determination of the Ghanaian people in advancing national development and reinforcing democratic institutions.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Ghana through greater economic cooperation, stronger diplomatic engagement, and expanded cultural exchanges, expressing optimism that the relationship between the two nations will continue to grow in ways that promote regional prosperity and the vision of a united and peaceful Africa.
