New 5kVA Hybrid Solar System Built by ABUAD Students

Twelve engineering students from Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), have made headlines after successfully designing, constructing, and donating a 5kVA solar photovoltaic system to the university’s College of Engineering.

The students, drawn from six different engineering departments, completed the project under the guidance of Professor B.A. Adaramola. The system now powers essential areas of the A and E wings of the Engineering College, providing reliable electricity for departments including Mechanical, Mechatronics, and Aeronautical Engineering.

As reported by Educa.ng’s academic innovation desk, the student-led initiative utilized locally sourced materials and demonstrated not only technical skills but also a deep commitment to energy sustainability and community service.

The students involved included representatives from Electrical & Electronics, Computer, Biomedical, and Aeronautical Engineering disciplines—highlighting a collaborative, cross-departmental approach to solving real-world challenges.

The university’s corporate affairs unit also announced that a second, more powerful 7.5kVA solar project is currently in progress, with the goal of extending renewable energy to Civil, Chemical, and Petroleum Engineering departments.

Afe Babalola University’s founder, Aare Afe Babalola, praised the initiative as a symbol of Nigeria’s academic future. “You shall excel in all your endeavours,” he said while addressing the students.

Provost of the College of Engineering, Prof. Moses Onibonoje, noted that the solar system was part of a final-year project supported by the university’s Research Clusters, which include focus areas like smart materials, food security, and renewable energy.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Smaranda Olarinde hailed the donation as a “landmark achievement” and an inspiration to other students across the nation.
