In light of a recent EFCC arrest, E-Money advises Nigerians to stop the practice of spraying Naira at parties

As Nigeria’s festive culture continues to dazzle with music, glamour, and opulence, one prominent voice is now calling for a shift in how we express celebration. Emeka Okonkwo, better known as E-Money, has appealed to Nigerians to avoid spraying the Naira and other currencies at social gatherings, urging respect for legal and financial institutions.

Through an Instagram post on Thursday, the business mogul reminded his vast audience of the EFCC’s strict position on currency spraying, labeling the practice as unlawful and punishable. “Let’s celebrate responsibly and avoid fines. Respect our currency!” he wrote.

E-Money didn’t stop at mere warnings. He offered alternative ways to give celebratory cash without falling foul of the law: “If you must give money at a party, make sure you put it in a basket or in a bowl or container in front of the person at the party,” he said. He added that ignorance of the law would no longer be an acceptable excuse in such matters.

The timing of his statement is significant, as it follows allegations that he was invited for questioning by the EFCC over incidents involving spraying of both Naira and U.S. Dollar bills during high-profile events.

The EFCC, for its part, has reiterated that mishandling currency — including spraying, mutilation, or abuse of any kind — is not only distasteful but a violation of national law. Enforcement has grown sharper in recent months, especially with celebrities and public figures under increasing surveillance.

E-Money’s message may spark deeper discussions about the intersection between culture and compliance. As Nigeria modernizes, perhaps it’s time to update how joy is expressed — without compromising respect for its symbols of sovereignty.
