Gen Z will power Africa’s digital future, say experts

Acoording to Educa.ng, experts and stakeholders have said Generation Z will play a critical role in driving Africa’s digital transformation, noting that private universities are well-positioned to prepare them for that future.

They made the call at the 20th anniversary celebration of the Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun State, themed “The Future of Africa and Generation Z.”

The event featured exhibitions, leadership summits, debates, and networking sessions aimed at equipping students for success in emerging sectors such as technology, fashion, and digital media.

Speaking at the event, Country Lead of InstantRad Nigeria, Bayode Oke, said institutions like Bells University were already laying the groundwork for the continent’s digital revolution.

“The future is digital and collaborative. Gen Z will lead us into an era where humans and machines co-function. Their curiosity and refusal to accept outdated norms make them ideal innovators,” he said.

Also speaking, the Student Adviser at Bells University, Dr Oluwadamilola Alabi, called for greater government recognition and support for private universities, stressing that they are now driving innovation and research.

“From a few colleges and a modest student body, we’ve grown to over 4,000 students. Our research outputs, partnerships, and academic progress show that private universities are not just supporting the system—they are setting the pace,” Alabi said.

She also called for increased access to government research funding for private institutions.

“Private universities are breaking new ground in research and student training. We should be supported, not ignored,” she added.

An alumnus and lecturer in the Department of Architecture, Okon Edikan-Michael, described his time at Bells as pivotal.

“Bells gave me more than education—it gave me a mindset. We were taught not just theory but how to thrive in real-world situations,” he said.

On her part, student leader and event organiser, Abarikwu Anulike Ebere Rikwu, said the celebration was designed to highlight how the university empowers Gen Z students.

“We curated this event to inspire students to lead in industries of tomorrow—from tech to content creation,” she said.

The anniversary celebration will climax with a formal dinner and showcase of student-led innovations.
