Emergency Response Underway After Abuja-Kaduna Train Derails; Injuries Reported

Several passengers were injured on Monday morning after a train operating along the Abuja–Kaduna railway was involved in an incident that forced the service to stop midway during the journey.

The passenger train travelling from Kaduna to Abuja was unable to complete its trip as scheduled following the disruption on the rail corridor linking the Federal Capital Territory with Kaduna State.

A source within the Nigerian Railway Corporation confirmed the incident but requested anonymity, noting that he was not authorised to speak publicly on the matter.

Passengers on board said the situation occurred suddenly, causing panic inside the coaches as the train came to an abrupt halt.

Some travellers reported hearing a loud bang before the train jolted violently, throwing several occupants from their seats and creating confusion among those on board.

Eyewitness accounts suggested that the Abuja-bound train may have collided with another train along the corridor, prompting a temporary suspension of rail operations while officials assessed the situation.

Several passengers were said to have sustained injuries, including cuts and bruises, after being thrown against seats and metal fittings inside the compartments.

One passenger, Sada Malumfashi, who said he was on the train, shared his experience shortly after disembarking, describing the moment as frightening and unexpected.

Writing on his account on X, he explained that the sudden jolt caught many passengers off guard.

According to him, the train remained stationary for about 30 minutes before it resumed movement slowly toward Kubwa, located on the outskirts of the capital.

He wrote that passengers heard a loud impact before the train stopped abruptly, causing people to be thrown around the coach, with several travellers reportedly injured and bleeding.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Callistus Unyimadu, confirmed the development and said an official statement would be issued regarding the incident.

Further details are expected as investigations continue.
