Ekiti Varsity: FG Sets Take-Off Conditions

The newly created Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences (FUTES) in Iyin-Ekiti is positioning itself as a future-focused institution ready to redefine higher education in Nigeria. During an assessment visit, the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission outlined critical infrastructure requirements to ensure a successful September 2025 launch.

The inspection team, led by Mrs. Rakiya Gambo-Ilyasu, identified immediate needs such as a state-of-the-art library, multiple utility vehicles for administrative and security purposes, and 25 laptops for use by principal officers and department heads. Despite not having accessed its official take-off grant, the university already boasts an ICT centre, advanced science laboratories, a student clinic, and a 500-seater auditorium.

Mrs. Gambo-Ilyasu expressed confidence in the university’s direction, applauding the local community for donating land and contributing to construction efforts. She urged FUTES to adopt emerging technologies—including Artificial Intelligence—and shift from traditional learning models to research-led, job-focused education.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Gbenga Aribisala emphasized the university’s commitment to green innovation, revealing plans to generate energy through waste-to-power technology. He presented the physical master plan and reiterated that recruitment would be merit-based, with computer literacy as a requirement.

“We’re building a smart university for a smarter future,” Aribisala said, calling on private investors and development partners to support ongoing infrastructure needs.

Meanwhile, the Oluyin of Iyin-Ekiti, Oba Adeola Ajakaye, expressed his gratitude to the Federal Government and assured of the town’s full support in making FUTES a global model for modern tertiary education.
