Digital Transformation: UNILORIN to Host New Innovation Center

The Federal Government has selected the University of Ilorin as one of the tertiary institutions to host a state-of-the-art digital innovation hub, as part of the national Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (iDICE) initiative aimed at empowering Nigerian youth with 21st-century skills.

Educa.ng reports that, in a letter dated June 17, 2025, the National Universities Commission (NUC) formally notified Vice Chancellor Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN) of the decision. The Executive Secretary of NUC, Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, stated that UNILORIN’s inclusion reflects the institution’s proven capacity and strategic importance to Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem.

The iDICE programme, jointly funded by the Federal Government, the Bank of Industry, the African Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, and the French Development Agency, is designed to drive job creation through digital and creative industries.

Professor Ribadu described the selection as part of a broader effort to link academic knowledge with real-world enterprise, ensuring Nigerian graduates are equipped for the digital economy. He added that the hubs would foster collaboration between students, faculty, and industry leaders.

Reacting to the development, Professor Egbewole, through Mr. Kunle Akogun, Director of Corporate Affairs, said the university was honored by the selection and committed to full participation. He also announced plans to establish an innovation fund drive during UNILORIN’s upcoming 50th anniversary.

The Vice Chancellor reiterated the university’s readiness to deliver value through the hub, ensuring it becomes a national model for youth empowerment, digital skills, and entrepreneurship.
