15-Year-Old from Abia to Get U.S. Tech Training

In an inspiring development for Nigeria’s budding tech scene, 15-year-old Grace Nkpa of Abia State has been selected for the prestigious TechGirls International Exchange Programme at Virginia Tech University, USA.

Nkpa, a high school senior from Academic Planet School in Aba, will be among young female STEM enthusiasts from 37 nations, where they will undergo training in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), alongside mentorship and leadership workshops during the three-month exchange.

In a feature published by Educa.ng’s education news desk, it was revealed that Nkpa is one of only three Nigerian girls chosen for the 2025 cohort, making her an emerging role model for girls aspiring to tech careers.

During a special meeting with Governor Alex Otti and Abia State government officials at the Government House in Nvosi, Nkpa expressed gratitude for the opportunity and promised to represent her state and country with distinction.

“I’m so thankful to God and everyone who supported me. I’ll make Abia proud,” she said.

She also sent an inspiring message to other girls, encouraging them to pursue their dreams despite obstacles.

“Don’t let anyone tell you it’s impossible. Dream big and go for it,” she urged.

Governor Otti commended her for the landmark feat, urging her to share her experiences with other youths upon her return.

“You are not just going for yourself; you are going for all of us. Come back and uplift others too,” he said, announcing a $5,000 cash gift to support her journey.

Mrs. Ureh Abazie, the state’s Orientation Agency head, said Nkpa’s selection followed a highly competitive process involving more than 250,000 applicants across Nigeria.

Nkpa, from Abiriba in Ohafia Local Government Area, now stands ready to inspire a generation of girls from Abia and beyond as she steps onto the international stage.
