LEKKI TOLL: OCCUPY PROTEST FLOPS

… As only a handful of people turned up for the rally.
An attempt on Friday, February 9, 2018 by a group to stage a massive protest against the lekki toll review on Lekki-Epe Expressway toll gate of Lekki Concession Company (LCC) failed, as the group could not muster enough or reasonable public support for the protest.Only a few people turned up for the rally that enjoyed a huge media hype before today.

The protest which was scheduled to commence at 7am could not gather up to five people at about 9am at a junction close to the Lekki Peninsula Phase 1 gate. The obviously disappointed leader of the group told reporters that it is important and constitutional to make their voice heard and demand for total cancellation of toll at Lekki-Epe expressway and Ikoyi link bridge regardless of lack of support for the protest by motorists.

The protesters moved from lekki phase 1 gate through the admiralty road within Lekki phase 1 with the media which were attended by only a two dozens people, although traffic and economic activity within Lekki axis were normal.
There were more police presence than usual at the Lekki phase 1 roundabout to maintain law and an order. The group dispersed at about 11.10am on their own after about a 2-hour protest.

It would be recalled that the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) had announced the review in tolls at the Admiralty Circle Plaza at the Lekki Expressway and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge Plaza with effect from Thursday, February 1, 2018 after an extensive stakeholders engagement that  the toll fare increase is as a result of current economic and business realities that have adversely increased the cost of operations and maintenance of the company’s loan obligations to its local and foreign lenders.
